LICVB SUPPORTS CHARLES WANG’S PROPOSAL FOR “LIGHTHOUSE AT LONG ISLAND” PROJECT
HAUPPAUGE, NY -(July 6, 2005)- The Board of Directors of the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau & Sports Commission unanimously endorsed in principle Charles Wang's proposed vision for The Lighthouse at Long Island project. The endorsement followed an in-depth and detailed presentation by Mr. Wang and his staff during the Board’s June 29 meeting.
“The Bureau has an obligation to review and support those quality programs and projects that serve to enhance the visitor industry on Long Island,” said Board Chairperson Gloria Rocchio. “We felt that this particular project holds great promise and can elevate Long Island’s visibility as a major travel destination.”
Bureau President Moke McGowan noted, “The expansion of the Coliseum, the athletic complex, and especially the proposed conference center and exhibition hall, will create the type of products that are desperately needed to help Long Island be competitive in the corporate group market place while helping to increase occupancies within our hotel community.” He further added that hotel occupancies have been depressed during the past four years and the various components of the Lighthouse project collectively would work as a beacon, helping draw more visitors to Long Island. “This is the type of potential public and private sector partnership that can have immense benefits for Nassau County and Long Island as a whole.”
The Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission (LICVB&SC) was established in 1979 as a marketing arm for the destination’s nearly $5 billion travel and tourism industry.
