We welcome once again the Scottish Games to Long Island as it is one of the seasons most culturally enriching events, remarked Moke McGowan, President of the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission. The heritage and history of Scotland is one of the most interesting in the world and I am glad that each year we can spend some time on Long Island learning more about it.
Among the exciting competitions will be world-famous Highland Dancing, drumming, pipe bands, solo piping and a short bread contest. There will also be contests for children including tug-o-war and caber toss as well as tossing the sheaf and putting the stone.
Entertainment will include a variety of pipe bands throughout the day as well as massed bands at the events official opening and closing ceremonies. Fiddlers, harpists, Scottish singers and Scottish country dancing will also be a part of the festivities. Antique British automobiles will be on display as well as Scottish historical weapons, birds of prey and a Sheepdog exhibition. There will also be a raffle with a trip to Scotland and other prizes up for grabs!
Traditional foods will be offered such as fish & chips, Scottish pies and other delicacies. No alcoholic beverages will be sold on the grounds.
Free parking is available on-site and at the nearby Westbury High School with a free shuttle bus linking the school with the grounds. For further information on the Long Island Scottish Games contact: www.liscots.org or call 516-731-1300 (day) or 516-883-9396 (evenings).
