GIRLFRIENDS GETAWAY: LEAVING IT ALL BEHIND ON LONG ISLAND

HAUPPAUGE, NY -(February 10, 2006)- Long Island is the perfect place for a “girlfriends getaway weekend,” a place where friends can get together, site-see, dine, visit museums, spas, historical places and shop. The LICVB&SC and I LOVENY are teaming up to offer the following “girlfriends-themed” getaway. Visit www.iloveny.com for more Girlfriend Getaway ideas.

Day One
A great place to start your Long Island Girlfriend Getaway is the very historic, yet very chic, Southampton. First, meander through this lovely village where the sparkling Atlantic Ocean meets white sandy beaches and browse among the quaint, one-of-a-kind shops. Then make your way to the Parrish Art Museum. Devoted to American art of the 19th and 20th centuries, the museum offers a regular schedule of changing exhibits and an extensive collection that includes paintings by William Merritt Chase and Fairfield Porter, two major artists of the genre. Southampton has amazing food so for lunch you and your friends can choose from the great selection of trendy and upbeat restaurants.

Next, check out Montauk, an entire beach community situated directly on the Atlantic Ocean at the Eastern end of the Island. A scenic drive along Highway 27 will take you past sand dunes and the beautiful Napeague and Hither Hills State Parks. After a 45 minute drive, you will arrive at Montauk Point Lighthouse, perched high above the Atlantic Ocean on an ocean bluff. Few places evoke the mystery, strength and timelessness of the Montauk Lighthouse. Captain Kidd was said to have buried treasure at several locations on Long Island, so let your imagination play as you climb the steps, scanning the horizon in search of pirate ships, castaways, mermaids and other treasures of the sea. Approximately two miles west of your pirate adventure, is Deep Hollow Ranch, the oldest cattle ranch in the country. If your group is feeling adventurous, you can ride horseback along the exquisite seashore.

Whether all of you decide to linger by the lighthouse or saddle-up, it is now time to concentrate on a different kind of beauty. A 10-15 minute drive west will take you to one of the jewels of Long Island, the Gurneys Inn Resort. This resort’s spectacular ocean views in a wild, windswept setting are the backdrop for a fabulous line-up of unique spa treatments, many of which harness the power of the sea for healing and relaxation. Choose “The Seaweed Wrap”, “The Outdoor Massage” overlooking the ocean, or the “Peppermint Ocean Plunge”, and you will all feel the rejuvenating power of the ocean. Or simply pay a modest fee to use the spa facilities, which include a seawater-fed Roman bath, whirlpool, Olympic-size pool, sauna, steam, Swiss Shower, fitness center and, of course, the beach. Gurney’s is also a first-rate resort where you can spend the night and continue to soak up the ocean’s magic. If you are in the mood to keep moving, continue west along the coast where you will pass seafood stands and catch glimpses of the sea. This route will take you back down the Island, and you can select accommodations from the many bed & breakfasts and other lodging choices in this resort area.

Day Two
East Hampton, located approximately 30 minutes west of Montauk, is where history and luxury meet to create a wonderful ambiance. The first stop today will be the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center for an intimate glimpse into the life of legendary artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. It will become clear why the Island lured a generation of artists and writers, dating back to the 1880s, when you visit this national landmark. Wander through the many shops in town that feature fine, hand-crafted wares and elegant antiques and then grab a bite for lunch at Rowdy Hall or another East Hampton eatery.

Next stop on this getaway is Sag Harbor, which is a 15-minute drive west on Highway 27. Sag Harbor is a shoppers’ paradise where the atmosphere has changed little since the 1700’s. A little shopping is always a must for any getaway with your friends! Also, Sag Harbor’s rich and interesting history is on display at the Whaling & Historical Museum, featuring whaling artifacts, hand-carved scrimshaw for sale, vintage paintings and prints, and historical boat collection.

From Sag Harbor, a short ferry ride and a drive takes you through Shelter Island to Greenport on the North Shore. Then it is on to wine country, where dozens of vineyards have emerged offering the best of the spirit of Long Island. You can all compare your preferences in fine wine at any one of several award-winning wineries such as Castello di Borghese and Peconic Bay Winery in Cutchogue, two delightful vineyards that offer public tastings. Check www.nywine.com and www.liwine.com for a complete listing of Long Island’s many wineries and events that range from food and wine pairing. Some of the events specifically feature signature dishes prepared by top Long Island and Manhattan chefs incorporated with live music and dancing.

Finally a 40-minute drive west will take your group to the Long Island Expressway and homeward bound. If time permits, do not miss the Tanger Factory Outlet Centers in Riverhead, a fantastic haven for the latest in fashions, home furnishings and last minute finds at unbeatable prices.
