SPRING ON LONG ISLAND: PUBLIC GARDENS, FLOWER SHOWS, FESTIVALS AND MORE

HAUPPAUGE, NY -(March 21, 2006)-  With thousands of acres of public gardens on Long Island, many on the grounds of stunning mansions and estates, and a broad range of flower shows, festivals, competitions and tours planned, Long Island is the place to visit to enjoy the fragrance of spring.

Come see 30,000 daffodils in bloom at Coe Hall, attend the Huntington Tulip Festival, or go on a tour of private gardens in the exclusive Hamptons.

Make a day of it and combine a spring day outing with lunch at one of Long Island’s fine restaurants. Book a hotel with friends or family and create a “weekend getaway” that’s sure to revive your senses and help you shake off winter’s chill.
 
Following is a listing of public gardens on Long Island, as well as events, tours and shows:

Bayard Cutting Arboretum
690 acres in an idyllic setting along the Connetquot River, with five nature walks (pinetum, wildflower, rhododendron, bird-watchers, swamp cypress), wildflower/daffodil displays, tree collection.  Estate mansion, with snack bar, overlooking a great lawn sweeping down to the river.

Bailey Arboretum
42 acres, self-guided nature trail; exceptional collection of conifers, Daffodils in April, flowering trees in spring, annuals and perennials throughout the summer.  Arboretum also has a sensory garden for the physically challenged. Address: Bayville Road, Lattingtown, NY 11560

Hofstra Arboretum
Spread across the 240-acre campus, with a pinetum and a greenway; specialized gardens include a sensory garden for the physically challenged (plants, which are at wheelchair level, can be handled, with a water element for sound), the New American Garden of easy-care perennials and ornamental grasses on the north campus.  Bird sanctuary with waterfall and songbird study garden. Clark Botanic Garden
Twelve acres of living museum and education facility.  We are dedicated to understanding and appreciating the world’s plant life through horticulture, education and research.  Collections at the garden include native spring wildflowers, conifers, roses, perennials, daylilies, wetland plants, rock garden plants, herbs, butterfly plant, medicinal plants and over a dozen collections of particular plant families. John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden
This hilly woodland garden contains native and Asian plants, bamboo groves and a pond with a waterfall.  Cherry blossoms appear in mid-April, Asian wildlife and azaleas bloom in May, Japanese iris in June. Old Westbury Gardens
160- Acres, with eight formal English gardens surrounding the Charles II-style mansion, including a walled perennial garden, cottage and rose gardens. Tours, gift shop, plant sales, garden workshop and classes throughout the season. Address: Old Westbury Road, Old Westbury, NY 11565. Longhouse Reserve

Planting Fields Arboretum
409 acres, with four and a half miles of nature trails and 150-acres of landscaped plantings, including rhododendron and azalea displays.  There’s a synoptic garden, a rose garden, a main greenhouse with exotic plants year-round, a camellia greenhouse and a gift shop (with plant sale). Hours of operation: daily from 9am – 5pm except Christmas Day. Fee: $6.00 parking fee May 1st – October 31st and on weekend & holidays after October 31st – April 30th.
