VISIT LONG ISLAND FOR A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS
ArtsWave Promotes Community-Building Ability Of The Arts In Downtown Districts

HAUPPAUGE, NY-(April 18, 2006)- Long Island communities come to life this spring as ArtsWave sweeps through Long Island’s downtown districts bringing film, music, dance and art.

ArtsWave, developed by the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Workforce Housing, Office of Film and Cultural Affairs, is designed to highlight the ability of the arts to round out the sense of community in Long Island’s Main Street districts. The spring arts festival focuses attention on the events happening in Suffolk County’s downtown areas, historic districts and in landmark buildings.

During the month of May a "network of creative communities" that make up Suffolk County will participate by offering programs in film, dance, music, and theater as well visual art exhibits.  Outside of New York City, Suffolk County enjoys one of the nation's highest concentrations of arts and cultural organizations and activities, according to the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development.

Most downtown areas have a least one cultural arts “anchor” that often serves as the catalyst for downtown revitalization efforts. These anchor facilities often spur other economic redevelopment that creates millions of dollars in the expansion of cultural facilities and in attracting new shops and restaurants, according to the County.

A recent study conducted by Dr. Pearl Kamer, Chief Economist for the Long Island Association, found that arts organizations contribute over $200 million in economic impact for Suffolk County alone.  ArtsWave offers communities the opportunity to benefit from the "arts effect."

Following are some of the exciting activities and events planned during May ArtsWave:
