TWO LONG ISLAND BEACHES NAMED IN 2006 TOP TEN BEACHES LIST

Hauppauge, NY-(May 26, 2006)- Coopers Beach in Southampton and Main Beach in East Hampton have both been named in the prestigious Top Ten Beach Report by beach connoisseur, Dr. Beach, AKA: Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Dir. of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research and National Healthy Beaches Campaign.

Long Island’s beaches are well-known for their soft white sand and sparkling shores that seem to stretch forever. Long Island is 118 miles long, and 20 miles wide at its widest point, which means there are plenty of beaches to choose from, and you’re never far from the shore.

Coopers Beach in Southampton was named number four on the list and Main Beach in East Hampton was named number six, ranked alongside the top beaches in Hawaii, California and Florida, among other locations.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Leatherman has been rating U.S. beaches and creating what is known as the “who’s-who” list for the nation’s top beaches. Fifty criteria are used to evaluate beaches, which include water and sand quality as well as facilities and management. What makes Leatherman's selections unique is his knowledge as a Ph.D. coastal scientist with 30 years of scientific experience studying storm impacts, erosion and ways to improve beach health, according to the Laboratory for Coastal Research.
