LONG ISLAND: RICH IN NAUTICAL, SCENIC AND CULINARY DELIGHTS
Long Island CVB Teams With ILOVENY To Promote Culinary Tourism
Hauppauge, NY -(July 17, 2006)- Long Island is rich, not only in nautical and scenic treasures, but in culinary delights as well. Take a lovely journey through Long Island’s rich nautical past, stroll the beaches at sunset, enjoy exciting events like horseracing, wander through historic mansions and gardens, or go “star-gazing” for celebrities in the Hamptons. While here, enjoy the specialties of the house at many fine restaurants.
The LICVB&SC and the NYS Department of Economic Development (ILOVENY) have teamed to suggest the following “culinary themed” tour to promote the region’s culinary and scenic attractions. ILOVE NY selected top-rated restaurants from around the State and worked with local destination marketing organizations to develop a themed tour that makes fine dining part of the unique atmosphere gained when traveling to a destination.
Following is the Long Island Culinary Adventure:
Plan a Long Island outing and what comes to mind? Seafood? Wine? Duck? Fresh locally-grown produce? After all, with the Island’s rich soil, plentiful sunshine and abundant fresh water, prepare yourself for an exquisite dining experience...surfside!
Day One
Begin with lunch at Caffe on the Green, in Bayside. This romantic restaurant is set in a mansion that was once the home of silent film star, Rudolph Valentino. The dining room is decorated like an Italian farmhouse, with dappled walls and rustic murals, and the expansive menu includes delicate and original variations on traditional recipes. Specialties of the house include Chilean sea bass seared with shrimp, leeks and shitake mushrooms. Save room for the pastry chef's decadent creations. After lunch, drive to historic Belmont Park in Elmont; the racetrack is the site of Thoroughbred racing's Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown. After an exciting afternoon tour Old Westbury Gardens, a magnificent estate that provided the setting for films such as the Alfred Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest and the romantic 1970s Love Story. In nearby East Meadow, dine at The Carltun, where celebrities frequent the Palm Court. Praised by Zagat's for offering superbly creative cuisine and some of Long Island's most beautiful décor, The Carltun also has an oyster bar that offers exotic varieties of shellfish. Ask for a tour of The Havanas Cigar Club, an elaborately designed private gathering spot with its own restaurant, bar and walk-in cedar humidor. Head about 25 miles east to Port Jefferson and spend the night at Danfords on the Sound, an upscale inn on the north shore. Danfords combines Old World charm and elegance with state-of-the-art amenities.
Day Two
After breakfast, take a walk through Port Jefferson’s colorful Victorian village. Then continue eastward to The Hamptons, renowned for world-class wineries, incomparable shopping, white sandy beaches, and rural maritime charm that has drawn artists, socialites and celebrities for decades. Make a reservation at Sky Sailors in Westhampton to soar above the spectacular scenery in a glider. Lunch at Tierra Mar, along Westhampton’s scenic Dune Road, where exceptional cuisine is prepared by Chef Todd Jacobs, a French Culinary Institute graduate named the best chef in the Hamptons by Smart Money Magazine. Jacob’s inventive menu includes creations like Smoked Honey Cured Long Island Duck Breast and Crisp Pan Seared Local Flounder. Tierra Mar has been included among The New York Times' Ten Standout Restaurants in the Hamptons. Plan an afternoon at the beach or tour the Parrish Art Museum, exhibiting major works by William Merritt Chase and Fairfield Porter. Dine at The Plaza Café, one of Southampton’s premier restaurants, specializing in seafood. This critically acclaimed restaurant is in Zagat's "America's Top Restaurants," and gets high praise for its outstanding wine list, innovative dishes, and professional service. After dinner, drive a short distance northeast to the historic whaling port of Sag Harbor with its centuries-old streets lined with ancient trees, pristine beaches and stylish shops and cafes. Spend the night at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor. Built in 1846, it is listed with the exclusive Historic Hotels of America" and considered by locals and visitors as one of the East End’s most elegant establishments.
Day Three
Drive a few miles south to the Channing Daughters Vineyards in Bridgehampton, known for handmade artisanal wines, and the Wolffer Estate Winery in Sagaponack, with its enchanting Tuscan architecture and lush scenery. With nearly 30 vineyards dotting the eastern end of Long Island, this area is renowned as one of the world’s most exciting new wine regions. In East Hampton, admire the former home of Jackson Pollack, whose innovative style of painting stunned the art world. Take the ferry to Shelter Island and the North Fork, to enjoy a late afternoon pampering at the Quintessentials Bed and Breakfast & Spa in East Marion. Plan to spend the night at Quintessentials after dining at the improbably named Frisky Oyster, located in the seaport village of Greenport. “Co-owned by Dennis McDermott and Hank Tomashevski, whose food has earned them endless accolades at private parties in Manhattan, the menu is short and sweet, seasonal, and highly imaginative,” according to Conde Naste; “The Frisky Oyster, is serving some of the most imaginative food around in a relaxed and supremely chic setting. Try their Long Island roast duck with bing cherries and, for the Francophile carnivore, the best steak frites this side of the Atlantic.”
Day Four
Take the ferry back to the South Fork, then drive to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island. Captain Mark Marose will thrill you with a day of charter fishing. Named the best of the best by Dan’s Papers, even beginners will be swept up in the excitement of landing a big one! Deep Hollow Ranch, America’s oldest ranch, will treat you to a beautiful beach and trail ride through acres of parkland. Take a walking tour of the historic Montauk Lighthouse, then shop in the fantastic boutiques at Gosman’s Dock and in the village of Montauk. Make sure to sneak a treat at the Montauk Bake Shop; locals say it serves the best coffee in town. The Montauk Yacht Club Resort Hotel, named a Top Ten Destination in North America, invites you to dine at their award winning Lighthouse Grill restaurant. You’ll be treated to American cuisine featuring seafood, steaks and chops served in a casually elegant atmosphere. After a stroll down the boardwalk to one of the romantic hideaway villas, cozy up with a bottle of Long Island wine. Ah! La bella vita! Before dinner at one of the fine South Fork restaurants, relax on the wrap around porch or stroll in the garden to watch the sunset.
