HAUPPAUGE, NY -(May 25, 2007)- Despite escalating gasoline prices and a tepid national economy, Long Island tourism officials are expecting a healthy summer season.  Consumer surveys conducted by AAA and the Travel Industry Association of America indicate more Americans will be traveling by car this Memorial Day holiday weekend than last year, buoying the optimism.  Based on a national survey of 2,000 adults, AAA estimates an increase of 1.8% more travelers taking to the roads over last year.

“That’s not to say there won’t be some impact,” said Moke McGowan, president of the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission. “We expect travel consumers won’t travel as far, stay as long or spend as much.  But they will travel.”

McGowan also noted that Long Island hotels and motels have seen a slight increase in occupancy rates through April, over the same time frame in 2006. Occupancy at Long Island accommodations is up 5.4% over last year island-wide, according to Smith Travel Research, a national research firm that specializes in tracking industry lodging data.

Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) is forecasting an annual increase in domestic travel of 1.4%.  Domestic travelers are individuals who travel 50 miles or more from home and who may or may not spend a night at their destination.

The Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission (LICVB&SC) is the official tourism promotion agency for the destination’s travel and tourism industry. Based on Long Island in Hauppauge, NY, the LICVB&SC contributes to the economic development and quality of life on Long Island by promoting the region as a world-class destination for tourism, meetings and conventions, trade shows, sporting events, and related activities.
