REEL FUN FISHING ON LONG ISLAND

HAUPPAUGE, NY –(September 12, 2007)-  Perhaps predestined to offer an amazing fishing experience, even being geographically shaped as a fish, Long Island indulges the beginner to the casual and even the seasoned angler with a variety of salt water fishing experiences.

Originally named “Paumanauke” by the Native Americans, meaning “tribute to the sea,” the fish-shaped island extends from the Hudson River into the Atlantic Ocean for 120 miles. Surrounded by water on all sides, it has over 400 miles of coastline.

The island offers a variety of fishing excursions due to its geographic diversity, with exciting ocean fishing or calmer bay fishing. Species of fish include mackerel, blackfish, striped bass, bluefish, porgies, flounder and fluke, in addition to ocean bluefish, shark, tuna, cod and striped bass.

Opportunities exist for private charter, party boat fishing or “rent your own” boating.

Bait your hook and whet your appetite for the great outdoors at the tail end of Long Island, Montauk Point and Orient Point. The two points offer distinct sport fishing experiences for everything from striped bass to shark fishing. There are various types of overnight vacation opportunities, ranging from nearby spa hotels, oceanfront motels and budget accommodations.

Hop aboard and set sail with professional sea captains and crew. Have the choice to bring your own bait or use the bait given on the boat. The variety of ocean fishing is tremendous and no two fishing trips will be alike.

Various places offer different type of excursions depending on the season. Most places provide reels, bait, and tackle with captains and crew who are more then content to show upcoming sea farers how to use them. Reservations are recommended for most trips. Fishing boats are regulated by the Department of Environmental Conversation to insure against over fishing and to keep the waters healthy for future generations. There are restrictions on how many fish a person can catch and the size of the fish.

Sail away in sapphire colored waters off the bay at Captree. Bay fishing offers calm waters and a relaxed atmosphere. The unique bay water has a variety of fish such as black and blue fish, summer and winter flounder, striped bass, cobia, sea bass, and many other species. Choose from half or full day excursions.

Freeport’s Nautical Mile is an experience within itself. Charter and party boats roam these waters with the wind in the sails and a song in the air. Fishing excursions, moonlight cruises, birthday, anniversaries, weddings, and company outings, are just a few of the events this location caters to. Park in convenient locations and simply walk to the marina where your adventure will begin.  Enjoy catered services on some charter boats.
After the visit, enjoy the sites of the Nautical Mile with local bars, boutiques, and clubs, a perfect end to the evening. Enjoy the catch of the day at fine waterside restaurants and clam bars. Attend year long events including national fishing tournaments and festivals.

Other Long Island fishing stations are located at Port Jefferson Harbor and Shinnecock Bay in Hampton Bays. Or fish right off the beach at parks such as Sunken Meadow, Wildwood, Montauk Point or Orient Point.

You can also rent your own boat through various companies, including hyperfishing.com, sillylily.com, boatrenting.com and the waterfrontcenter.org.
